Oklahoma Music

I haven’t heard anything like Paco Sala before. This is truly interesting and wonderfully toned ambient electronic music. This is the kind of music a lot of people need to be more aware of. Check out this Oklahoma native’s Bandcamp and see what I’m talking about.

Have you ever been stressed out? Do you have financial or academic concerns? This music is therapeutic. Just find the best pair of speakers or headphones around, turn it out, turn it up, and let all of your bad feelings slip away. I find it best to try and not even focus on the fact that music is playing. Just let it play, and try not to think about any words or concrete ideas. Good electronic music is able to take over your mind and get you to that state, and I think that Paco Sala does a great job of that. Go check it out and decide for yourself.

There are so many interesting sounds on Paco Sala’s album called Ro-me-ro on Bandcamp. I’m a relatively experienced listener of electronic music, and I really have no idea what a lot of this is. There are some interesting vocal sounds in there, a lot of really good keyboard sounds and the drums are interesting as well.

If you’re in Oklahoma, go find this guy and tell him to keep up the good work. I know it’s a big state, but he’ll love the encouragement. If you’re not able to make that kind of commitment, at least go give his stuff a listen on Bandcamp!

Shake Shake has two tracks on Bandcamp that you can get for fifty cents each! They’re totally blues garage rock. This girl has a sick voice too. Check them out even if you don’t want to shell out the one dollar for these awesome songs!

The first one is called “Go Away”, and it’s totally driven by this really awesome, really crunchy guitar riff. This is a rock song. This would sound really impressive at full volume in the top room at a mid-sized bar somewhere. I’d definitely watch it. There’s something about blues rock that makes you want to experience it in person.

The other track is called “Run, Abel, Run,” and it’s a bit of a creepier slow jam. There’s a male singer on this one with the girl, adding to the spookiness. This one is really good. I don’t know anything about Tulsa specifically, but this totally seems like a western saloon jam. I think I like “Run, Abel, Run” better than “Go Away.” It’s got some sharp dynamic and rhythm changes. I love those. It’s a sick story song too. That always helps.

Check out Shake Shake! I couldn’t find a Facebook page for them, but definitely go over to their Bandcamp and listen to them! If you like bluesy garage rock, there is no question that you will definitely like this. If you’re in Tulsa, go find them live and listen to them! This is one kind of music that is almost always better louder and live.

Sometimes you just really need to listen to something that you don’t have to think about. That’s not an insult to the creators of this type of music at all. It takes a lot of work to create ambient music that is truly ambient. Panabrite’s “Soft Terminal” album is ambient. I’ve felt very out of it all day, and listening to something like this is exactly what I need.

There are eight tracks on this album, and they are all perfectly textured drones. These songs drag along very simply, and you can totally just sit down and take them in. I highly recommend finding a great pair of speakers, turning this album up, and just laying on your floor or bed for the whole duration of the album.

Imagine yourself laying on a floating carpet as it floats through a city. Your eyes are closed. You know that everything around you is vibrant and moving, but somehow you are totally relaxed and completely capable of ignoring it all. You’re floating through Times Square. You’re floating through Tokyo at rush hour. You’re in the middle of the Super Bowl right after a referee makes a bad call. It doesn’t matter though because your eyes are closed and you’re on that floating carpet. That’s what this music is like. I’ve been having a rough day, but I can easily just listen to Panabrite, zone out, and completely forget about all of my problems, even if it only lasts for a little while.  

Broncho’s album “Can’t Get Past The Lips” starts with distorted vocals screqam, “Pick a fight! Pick a fight!” before the opening track, appropriately titled, “Pick A Fight”. This might be one of the best garage rock bands I’ve heard in a long time. I love this singer’s voice. These guitar tones are all totally appropriate for the genre, but the vocals are way better and much more legible than normal.

“Pick A Fight” is very solid, but my favorite of the album’s ten tracks is most likely “I Don’t Really Want To Be Social”. It’s so catchy, and relatively Ramones-esque. The main line is repeated several times using the melodic hook, and then elaborated upon. There’s a different part of the song that comes in right before the one minute mark and then it returns to the original melodic hook pretty quickly.

“Can’t Get Past The Lips”, the album’s last track is really great as well. It’s a bit faster and that bass tone really sticks out on this one. It’s very appropriately distorted, and the song is totally relatable. The song, like many of the others, isn’t even two minutes long, but that does nothing but keep the pace of the album flowing really well.

All of these songs are really good. Ryan Lindsey, Johnathon Ford, Nathan Price, and Ben King are making great garage rock somewhere in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Fans of professionally melodic songs with totally DIY sensibilities and honesty should absolutely head over to Broncho’s Bandcamp page. It’s hard not to like these songs.
